Morocco has named a major highway linking the southern cities of Tiznit and Dakhla after US President Donald Trump, in recognition of his administration’s decision to recognise Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara territory.
The 1,055-kilometre route will officially be known as the “Donald J. Trump Expressway,” Morocco’s state news agency MAP reported.
The agency described the decision as a reflection of the deep friendship between Morocco and the United States, as well as the close relationship between King Mohammed VI and Trump.
King Mohammed informed Trump of the decision in a letter dated July 2, 2026, saying the royal order would attach the US president’s name to one of Morocco’s largest infrastructure projects.
“While our longstanding relations are founded on the values of deep friendship and loyalty, they have never before achieved the richness and momentum witnessed during your two presidential terms,” the king said in the letter.
He added that Trump’s 2020 recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara would remain “engraved in the memory of Moroccans for generations” and had given unprecedented momentum to bilateral relations.
“In recognition of this gesture, inspired by a belief in the values of friendship and peace, and as an expression of my personal appreciation for you, I have decided to name one of the kingdom’s largest roads after you,” the king said.
The highway runs through southern Morocco and the Moroccan-controlled parts of Western Sahara. According to the royal palace, it is the largest road infrastructure project of its kind in Africa.
The United States recognised Morocco’s claim to Western Sahara in December 2020 during Trump’s first term, as part of a US-brokered agreement under which Morocco normalised relations with Israel.
Western Sahara remains a disputed territory, with the Algeria-backed Polisario Front seeking independence and the United Nations continuing to regard its final status as unresolved.
