Mozambique and the US strengthening defense and security ties

Mozambique’s President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi met with the U.S. Secretary of Defence on September 22 to discuss their bilateral defense ties and security cooperation.

Cabo Delgado, Mozambique’s northernmost province, has witnessed a conflict between authorities and radicalized fighters since 2017.

He emphasized the shared threat of terrorism and expressed gratitude for Mozambique’s partnership in countering violent extremist groups, along with cooperation with organizations like the Southern Africa Development Community and the European Union.

President Nyusi thanked President Biden and the U.S. government for their support in various areas, including the economy, health, and security.

During their meeting at the Pentagon, President Filipe Nyusi and Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III also discussed domain awareness and efforts to bolster maritime security.
