Namibia’s newly inaugurated President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah unveiled her first Cabinet on Saturday, marking a historic moment for the African nation.
Lucia Witbooi was appointed as Namibia’s first-ever female vice president.
This groundbreaking appointment makes Namibia the first country on the African continent to have both a female president and a female vice president.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah presided over the swearing-in ceremony in Windhoek for 14 ministers, a significant majority of whom, eight, are women.
Additionally, seven deputy ministers were appointed.
“I have no doubt that we will deliver on what the people of Namibia have mandated to do,” the president affirmed during the announcement.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized the crucial role of state ministries in implementing programs focused on poverty eradication.
She further announced that the responsibilities for marginalized and disability affairs would be placed under the purview of the vice president’s office to ensure dedicated attention.
The president urged Namibians to provide the newly formed Cabinet with sufficient time to fulfill their responsibilities.
Other key appointments within the new Cabinet include Elijah Ngurare as the prime minister and Selma Ashipala-Musavyi as the minister of international relations and trade.
The composition of the Cabinet reflects a commitment to gender representation and addressing critical national issues.
