The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) stated on Thursday that 14 million Sudanese children need “urgent humanitarian support” amid the ongoing fighting in the country. The UN in Sudan made the statement on the International Day of Peace.
The statement added: “On World Peace Day, we call for an immediate end to the fighting in Sudan and respect for the rights and protection of every child.”
The international organization also stressed that “14 million children in Sudan need urgent humanitarian support.”
It emphasized the need for “immediate actions to save lives and enable children to thrive.”
On August 18th of the past year, UNICEF stated that it urgently needs $400 million to support 9 million children in Sudan. Furthermore, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) stated earlier in the same month that more than 20 million people are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity in the country.
The Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been engaged in ongoing clashes since mid-April, despite a series of ceasefires that have failed to halt the conflict. This has resulted in more than 3,000 deaths, mostly civilians, and over 5 million people displaced and becoming refugees both inside and outside the country.
