Niger expels three Chinese oil executives, shuts hotel

Niger’s military government has expelled three Chinese oil executives and shut down a Chinese-run hotel, reports confirmed Friday.

The three managers from China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Soraz, and Wapco were given just two days’ notice to leave the country.

The reasons behind the expulsion remain unclear, though local commentators suggested the executives ignored demands to ensure Nigeriens benefit from the country’s oil resources.

An official decree from Niger’s tourism ministry also revoked the license of the Soluxe International Hotel.

The hotel, which opened in 2015, catered primarily to workers from the companies involved in the expulsion.

Authorities cited “discriminatory practices” and fiscal irregularities as reasons for the decision.

The military regime, which took power following a 2023 coup, has focused on securing greater control over the nation’s oil and mining resources.

Petrol Minister Sahabi Oumar raised concerns in February over the disparity between the salaries of Nigerien workers and foreign staff at Soraz, demanding local executives be appointed and wage equality ensured.

This latest development comes amidst an unprecedented petrol shortage in Niger, which has struggled to refine its own oil despite being a producer.

The expulsions signal rising tensions between Niger and foreign corporations operating within its borders, as the country seeks to maximize its resources for local benefit.
