Niger forces strike Boko Haram chief

The Niger army announced on Thursday that it had successfully killed a leader of the terrorist group Boko Haram in the Lake Chad basin area. The region is where Niger borders Nigeria, Chad, and Cameroon, and is often an area of intense fighting between the military and terrorist groups.

In a statement, the military said the Nigerien armed forces, through a precise surgical operation, neutralized the infamous Bakura. He was identified by the armed forces as a feared leader of the Boko Haram sect, operating from an island in the Diffa region of southeast Niger.
