Niger requests Togo’s mediation with the international community

The military regime resulting from a Nigerien coup d’état sought Togo’s assistance as a mediator in discussions with the international community, particularly with West African countries that sanctioned Niger last summer.

General Salifou Moby, Niger’s Minister of Defense, held discussions with Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé in Lomé.

Following the July coup, the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) imposed stringent financial sanctions on Niger, urging the military to reinstate constitutional order.

General Mody criticized these sanctions and appreciated Togo’s continuous dialogue with the military regime.

Togo expressed its readiness to facilitate the talks, with Togo’s Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey, acknowledging the country’s role as a mediator.

The ruling junta in Niamey rejected Ecowas’ demands and insisted on a transitional period of up to three years to restore constitutional order amidst ongoing extremist insurgencies.

Togo has a history of mediation efforts in the region, including its involvement in the release of Ivorian soldiers detained in Mali in 2022.
