A commission appointed by Niger’s ruling military junta has proposed a five-year transition to democratic governance, state television reported on Thursday.
“The duration of the transition is set at 60 months, which may change depending on the security situation,” said Abdoulaye Seydou, a vice president of the commission.
Commission President Mamoudou Harouna Djingarey confirmed the timeline, adding that political parties would be dissolved under a new charter limiting the number of parties to between two and five.
The junta, which seized power in 2023, has expelled French and other European forces, aligning itself with Russia in its fight against militant groups—a shift mirroring developments in neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso.
