Nigeria has charged 76 people, including 30 minors, with treason following protests in August.
The demonstrators voiced their frustration with economic hardships in cities like Abuja and Lagos. Court documents detailing the charges were released on Friday.
The protests erupted over economic reforms by President Bola Tinubu that have fueled rampant inflation.
Tinubu defended the reforms as essential to stabilizing Nigeria’s struggling economy. However, many Nigerians are feeling the weight of the resulting cost-of-living crisis.
Amnesty International reported that 13 people were killed during clashes with security forces on the protests’ first day.
Meanwhile, a rights group highlighted that the 30 minors have been detained by police since August.
The minors have now been granted bail, and their trial is set for January, according to their lawyers.
Nigeria’s economic troubles are worsened by widespread insecurity, with armed groups regularly kidnapping civilians, especially in the north.
