Nigerian president Bola Tinubu emphasized the global significance of Nigeria, warning that neglecting the nation would have far-reaching consequences. He urged the United Nations to translate idealistic narratives into concrete actions, asserting that talking without addressing real challenges is a recipe for failure.
During a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York City, President Tinubu stressed that the UN must evolve from a platform for discussions into a powerful global action coordination center.
He expressed concerns that a significant portion of resources allocated to the world’s poorest nations is spent on administrative costs, hindering the organization’s ability to deliver much-needed help effectively.
Tinubu called for urgent, concerted action, particularly in addressing poverty and security challenges. He shared his personal journey from poverty to the presidency and reiterated his commitment to eradicating poverty in Nigeria.
He also voiced concerns about the exploitation of Africa’s mineral resources by illicit actors who smuggle out wealth while destabilizing the continent. He emphasized the need to challenge the misuse of human rights advocacy to impede developing economies from taking decisive action against such actors.
UN Secretary-General Guterres had acknowledged ongoing reforms within the UN to address institutional weaknesses and ensure better representation for the developing world.
He highlighted the importance of reforms related to debt, Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), and funding for middle-income countries.
Guterres expressed strong support for President Tinubu’s leadership and Nigeria’s role in the West African region.
