Nigeria, US, UK probe $235 million cocaine bust at Lagos port

Nigeria’s anti-narcotics agency is working alongside U.S. and British counterparts to investigate a $235 million cocaine shipment seized at Lagos’ Tincan Port, in one of the country’s largest drug busts.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said on Tuesday that authorities discovered 1,000 kg of cocaine in an empty container at a port terminal over the weekend. Terminal operators alerted the NDLEA and other port security agencies, which jointly examined the consignment.

Following laboratory tests confirming the substance as cocaine, the shipment was formally handed over to the NDLEA on Tuesday.

At the request of the Nigerian government, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) have joined the investigation.

NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa said the collaboration aims to ensure a thorough investigation. “The essence of working with our international partners is to leave no stone unturned so that all masterminds behind this large consignment can be brought to justice, wherever they are,” he said.
