Gunmen killed six people in an attack on Marit village in Nigeria’s Plateau state, authorities reported on Tuesday.
The central region has been experiencing heightened religious tensions. Several others sustained injuries in the overnight assault in the Barkin district.
Local resident David Davou recounted hearing gunshots while his family slept. He stated they hid in the bush and discovered dead bodies the following morning.
Authorities have yet to identify the perpetrators behind the violence.
Plateau state lies at the intersection of Nigeria’s predominantly Muslim north and Christian south, a region frequently plagued by inter-communal clashes.
This incident follows a period of intense unrest in April, during which over 100 people were killed in the state within two weeks.
In a particularly devastating event in December 2023, nearly 200 people were massacred in a Christian village.
The region’s history is marked by conflict, often between Muslim Fulani herders and Christian farmers.
