Nigerian air force kills at least 40 Boko Haram fighters in Borno

Nigerian military airstrikes killed at least 40 Boko Haram fighters over two days this week in the restive northeastern state of Borno.

The Nigerian Air Force said the operations targeted militant positions on Thursday and Friday, striking deep into areas long scarred by insurgency.

Air Force spokesman Ehimen Ejodame confirmed in a written statement that dozens of militants were killed, while others were wounded in the bombardment.

He said the strikes were aimed at degrading Boko Haram’s operational capacity and disrupting its ability to stage further attacks.

Nigeria has battled Boko Haram and allied extremist groups since 2009, in a conflict that has devastated communities across the northeast.

The insurgency has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, casting a long shadow over Nigeria and its neighbours Cameroon, Chad and Niger.
