Nigerian army chief Lagbaja dies

Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after a period of illness. He was 56 years old.

Lagbaja, who assumed the role in June 2023, was a key figure in the nation’s ongoing battle against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents in the northeastern region.

His death comes at a critical juncture, as the military continues to grapple with the decade-long insurgency.

The late army chief had been absent from public view for nearly two months, leading to speculation about his health.

Although the Nigerian army initially denied rumors of his death, his passing was confirmed by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday.

The country has faced numerous security challenges under Lagbaja’s tenure, including widespread banditry, kidnapping, and communal clashes.

Despite efforts to curb these issues, the military has often been criticized for its handling of the situation.

Lagbaja’s death marks the second time a Nigerian army chief has died in office in less than four years.

His successor, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, was appointed acting Chief of Army Staff last week.

As Nigeria continues to navigate these complex security challenges, the military faces the daunting task of maintaining stability and protecting its citizens.
