Nigerian nurses suspend strike after government commits to reforms

Nigerian nurses have called off a seven-day warning strike after securing a memorandum of understanding that sets firm deadlines for higher pay, better working conditions and expanded hiring, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives said on Saturday.

Union leaders ended the walk-out, which began on 30 July, following Friday’s negotiations with Health and Social Welfare Minister Ali Pate and Labour and Employment Minister Muhammad Dingyadi. The agreement includes pledges to improve salaries, upgrade facilities and launch fresh recruitment drives to ease staff shortages.

The union said it will closely track the government’s adherence to the timeline and warned that industrial action could resume if commitments are not met. Officials also agreed that no nurse who joined the strike will face disciplinary measures.
