Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has called for an end to three days of deadly protests over the rising cost of living, which have resulted in at least seven deaths and over 700 arrests. In a televised address,
Tinubu acknowledged the pain and frustration of the demonstrators but defended his economic reforms, which include removing a petrol subsidy and ending the currency peg to the dollar.
Tinubu expressed concern over the protests being hijacked by looters and stressed the need for order and dialogue.
Despite his appeal, protesters remain defiant, demanding tangible actions and public discussions. Amnesty International has reported 13 deaths and called for an independent inquiry into the violence.
Protests were inspired by recent successful demonstrations in Kenya and were organized under the hashtag #EndBadGovernance.
Curfews continue in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, and Yobe states to curb the unrest.
