Nigeria’s anti-graft agency recovers almost $500 million in one year

Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the recovery of nearly $500 million in illicit funds within the past year.

This marks a record high for the agency, which has also secured over 4,000 criminal convictions.

The EFCC’s report, released Monday, highlights efforts to combat endemic corruption, a long-standing issue in Africa’s largest energy producer.

Some recovered funds have been reinvested into government projects, the agency stated.

Nigeria currently ranks 140 out of 180 on Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index.

Beyond monetary recoveries, the EFCC reported significant seizures of assets.

These include 931,052 metric tons of petroleum products, 975 real estate properties, and various company shares.

The agency’s intensified efforts reflect a push to curb financial crimes and bolster public trust.
