Nigeria’s ruling party backs Tinubu for 2027

Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has endorsed President Bola Tinubu for re-election in 2027.

This decision, announced at a summit in Abuja, aims to allow Tinubu to continue his economic reforms.

Tinubu, 73, won the 2023 presidential election, a result challenged by his rivals, who alleged rigging.

The APC praises Tinubu’s reforms, including removing petrol subsidies and liberalizing the exchange rate.

These reforms have drawn approval from credit agencies and the IMF, though critics cite a severe cost-of-living crisis.

APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje declared Tinubu the party’s sole candidate for the upcoming election.

The summit coincided with Tinubu’s second anniversary as president, with ministers highlighting their achievements.

Nigerian presidents can serve a maximum of two four-year terms.

Despite criticism over economic hardship and ongoing insecurity, the opposition is considered too divided to pose a significant threat.

The APC has also seen opposition members defect to their party, a move Tinubu considers part of political maneuvering.
