Nine killed in informal settlement shooting in S Africa

A horrific shooting erupted in South Africa’s North West Province on Saturday night, leaving nine people dead and eight injured.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. in the Popo Molefe informal settlement outside Rustenburg, where a group of residents were gathered, local police confirmed Sunday.

According to police reports, the victims, five men and four women, were sitting in a yard enjoying drinks when an unknown number of assailants, believed to be speakers of the Sesotho language, opened fire. Eight individuals succumbed to their wounds at the scene, while a ninth tragically lost their life upon arrival at the hospital. Eight others sustained injuries in the attack.

“The motive behind the shooting remains unclear at this stage,” stated police in their official statement. “We are currently investigating the incident thoroughly and working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.”

The attack took place within the Xhosa-speaking community, raising concerns about potential language-related tensions. However, police have not officially confirmed any connection between the victims’ language and the motive for the shooting.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Rustenburg community and across South Africa. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time,” the police statement concluded. “We are committed to bringing justice to those who are responsible for this senseless act of violence.”
