Over 20 civilians killed following market shelling in Sudan, says NGO

The Sudanese human rights organization Emergency Lawyers stated that 20 civilians were killed, and several others were injured on Sunday evening following shellings on a market in Omdurman during clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The organization mentioned that the shells fell on the Ziqluna market during what it described as indiscriminate shelling in the area, terming the incident a massacre. It noted that the victims were transported to the Shandi hospitals in the River Nile state, north of Khartoum, and to the An-Noor hospital in Omdurman.

Emergency Lawyers held the conflicting parties responsible for the deaths of these civilian victims due to their insistence on continuing the conflict within residential areas. They reiterated their call for the parties to cease what they referred to as the senseless war.

According to Agence France-Presse, 15 other civilians were killed on Saturday after their homes were subjected to shelling in Khartoum.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and RSF began on April 15 due to tensions related to a proposed transition to civilian rule. After approximately seven months of fighting, the United Nations estimates that more than 9,000 people have lost their lives, and nearly 6 million individuals have fled their homes.
