Over 55,000 Sudanese refugees seek shelter in Uganda

Since the conflict erupted in Sudan in April 2023, more than 55,000 Sudanese refugees have fled to Uganda, according to a report by the European Civil Protection and Aid Operations (ECHO). Of these, 36,000 have arrived since January 2024, making Sudanese refugees the largest group among new arrivals to Uganda this year, with an average of 4,500 people arriving each month.

The influx of refugees has placed significant strain on Uganda’s resources, particularly in the Kiryandongo settlement in mid-Western Uganda, where 150-200 individuals are screened daily. The settlement faces severe shortages in medical supplies, healthcare infrastructure, and basic necessities, leaving refugees vulnerable.

Over a year of conflict in Sudan has displaced millions, many of whom arrive in Uganda traumatized and in need of urgent assistance. However, the Sudan Regional Refugee Response Plan is only 23% funded, highlighting the urgent need for additional resources to support both the refugees and the hosting communities.
