President commits to on-time Tunisia polls with no date declaration

Tunisian President Kais Saied said the country’s presidential elections will take place on time, as scheduled.

He did not, however, set a specific date for the polls.

“The next presidential elections will be held on time,” Saied said during a meeting late Monday with the head of the Independent High Electoral Commission, Farouk Bouasker.

Saied was elected president on Oct. 13, 2019 for a five-year term. The new presidential polls are expected to be held sometime this October.

Tunisia has been in the throes of a deep political crisis that has aggravated the country’s economic conditions since 2021 when Saied ousted the government and dissolved parliament.
