Prices of petrol and diesel rise to $3 per liter in Sudan

Fuel prices in Sudan witnessed a new, unofficial increase in October 2023. This came as a unilateral move by fuel distribution companies and some gas station owners following the rise in global oil prices over the past few weeks.

Global oil prices have increased over the past five weeks, surpassing the $90 per barrel mark, along with an increase in the cost of oil refining and the production of popular derivatives such as gasoline, diesel, and kerosene.

Fuel prices in Sudan did not witness any official increase or decrease in October. However, fuel distribution companies raised prices according to global crude oil and refined product prices.

Sources reported that gasoline prices in Sudan have seen a significant increase in the black market. Many people complained about the unavailability of gasoline at stations, while small quantities are obtained at exorbitant prices.

The sources added, “Some stations sell a 20-liter container at prices ranging between $56 and $60, which is between $2.8 and $3 per liter. These are significant numbers that require government intervention.”

It is worth mentioning that Sudan’s oil production is 60,000 barrels per day, making it the smallest producer in the OPEC+ alliance. Meanwhile, the newly born country of South Sudan produces around 100,000 barrels per day. With the escalation of clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the energy sector faces threats.
