Putin vows ‘full support’ for Africa at Sochi Summit

At the Russia-Africa ministerial conference held in Sochi on November 9-10, Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged “full support” to around 50 African nations. He reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in key areas such as sustainable development, counterterrorism efforts, and economic partnerships.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized the progress in relations between Russia and Africa, despite obstacles posed by the “collective West.” Lavrov’s comments echoed Russia’s stance of resisting Western influence and promoting a multipolar world order.

Experts have noted that Putin’s rhetoric closely resembles Cold War-era language, sparking debates about the true depth of Russia’s economic ties with African nations. The summit, part of Russia’s ongoing efforts to counter its international isolation, also included discussions on economic matters, such as digital development and Africa’s vast natural resources.

While there are questions about whether Russia’s engagement with Africa is driven by long-term strategic goals or opportunism, African leaders are hopeful for a lasting partnership that will address their continent’s pressing development needs.
