Putin welcomes Goita as new deals signed

Russia and Mali signed new agreements on Monday to strengthen trade and economic cooperation, the Kremlin announced.

President Vladimir Putin hosted Mali’s military leader, Colonel Assimi Goita, at the Kremlin for a two-hour meeting.

Putin described bilateral ties as following a “good upward trend,” despite current trade levels remaining modest.

He identified future cooperation opportunities in geological exploration, natural resource development, energy, logistics, and humanitarian efforts.

Among the signed deals was an agreement on nuclear energy cooperation, the Kremlin said.

Russia and Mali have long discussed constructing a low-power, Russian-designed nuclear plant in the West African nation.

Earlier this month, Mali began building a new Russian-backed gold refinery, aiming to enhance control over its rich natural resources.

Though one of Africa’s top gold producers, Mali currently lacks a certified refinery to process its output.

Goita, who seized power in coups in 2020 and 2021, has sought to reduce Mali’s reliance on Western partners.

Following the withdrawal of French and U.N. troops, Russian mercenaries have supported Mali’s fight against Islamist insurgents.

The Wagner Group announced its departure from Mali earlier this month, yet Russia’s African Corps remains active on the ground.

The deepening ties reflect Moscow’s growing influence in Africa amid shifting geopolitical alliances.
