Rail freight services resume at Mombasa Port in Kenya following floods

Kenya Railways announced on Monday that cargo rail services to the Mombasa port have recommenced following the repair of a track segment damaged by floods over the weekend.

Intense rainfall associated with the El Niño phenomenon has triggered flash floods, submerging towns across East Africa and displacing hundreds of thousands of individuals.

In Kenya, the flood-related death toll reached 52 as of Friday, with expectations of further increases.

The state-owned rail operator announced on social media platform X that cargo loading and offloading have resumed, alongside the normal operation of passenger services.

“We are now working round the clock to minimise any delays,” Kenya Railways said.
