Ramgoolam becomes Mauritius’ new PM after win

Navinchandra Ramgoolam, leader of the opposition, has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Mauritius.

President Prithvirajsing Roopun made the announcement on Tuesday, following Ramgoolam’s victory in the parliamentary elections.

At 77, Ramgoolam returns to power after his coalition, the Alliance of Change, defeated Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth’s Alliance Lepep.

Ramgoolam previously served as prime minister from 1995 to 2000 and 2005 to 2014.

More than 1 million voters participated, driven by economic struggles and political scandals.

The opposition won 60 of 62 seats, securing 62.6% of the vote.

Ramgoolam’s victory ends Jugnauth’s seven-year rule, which was marked by economic challenges and a wiretapping controversy.

This shift in power reflects widespread dissatisfaction with Jugnauth’s administration, signaling a demand for change.
