The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is pinning its hopes on upcoming talks in Switzerland to alleviate the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan.
ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict, calling it a “humanitarian disaster.”
The talks, initiated by the United States, aim to bring together Sudan’s warring factions for ceasefire negotiations.
While not directly involved in the discussions, the ICRC is urging the parties to prioritize humanitarian concerns.
Spoljaric emphasized the need for “very concrete humanitarian steps” to build trust and pave the way for a lasting ceasefire.
The crisis in Sudan has resulted in a catastrophic toll on the civilian population. Tens of thousands have lost their lives, and millions have been displaced from their homes.
The UN has warned that over half of Sudan’s population is facing acute food insecurity.
The ICRC’s appeal comes as the organization marks the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, which outline international humanitarian law.
Spoljaric stressed the importance of upholding these principles in the face of the ongoing conflict.
The international community is watching closely as the talks unfold, with hopes that a breakthrough can be achieved to end the suffering of the Sudanese people.
