RSF captures West Kordofan capital El Fula

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced on Thursday their capture of El Fula, the capital of West Kordofan State, after the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, withdrew from their defensive positions and headquarters.

Significant RSF military reinforcements had been deployed to the outskirts of El Fula on Wednesday. The following morning, they launched an attack on the army’s positions, forcing a retreat. By evening, the RSF confirmed the capture of El Fula, citing the move as necessary to counter the “increasing activity of the remnants of the defunct regime.”

The RSF reported heavy casualties on the opposing side and the seizure of various military vehicles, weapons, and ammunition. They established control over key locations, including the military garrison and the state government building.

Sudan has been engulfed in conflict between the army, led by Sovereign Council head Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF since April 2023. According to UN figures, at least 13,900 people have been killed, and over eight million displaced. Multiple ceasefire agreements brokered by Saudi Arabia and US mediators have failed to halt the violence.
