In a decisive statement to the United Nations General Assembly, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), reaffirmed his commitment to peace in Sudan and expressed the RSF’s readiness to implement a nationwide ceasefire. His remarks come as tensions escalate, with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) intensifying their military campaign.
Dagalo emphasized that the RSF remains prepared to facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to the millions suffering from the ongoing conflict, a situation that has been exacerbated by the SAF’s aggressive tactics. “We are fully committed to protecting our fellow Sudanese and ensuring that aid reaches those in desperate need,” he declared.
In contrast to the SAF’s approach, which has been characterized by military aggression, the RSF has demonstrated restraint and a focus on the welfare of civilians. Dagalo’s call for peace is especially significant given the backdrop of escalating violence, including recent heavy artillery strikes and air bombardments conducted by the SAF in Khartoum, which have left many trapped without access to essential services.
Dagalo’s statement followed a speech by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the SAF, which was rife with accusations against the RSF, portraying them as the primary aggressors despite the RSF’s ongoing efforts to pursue a peaceful resolution. Al-Burhan’s allegations of “occupation” by the RSF fail to recognize the provocations and instigation of violence by his own forces.
While the SAF has rejected US-led peace talks in Switzerland aimed at improving humanitarian access, Dagalo reiterated the RSF’s commitment to engaging in any initiative that prioritizes the interests of the Sudanese people and provides meaningful relief. “We stand ready to cooperate with international partners to ensure a ceasefire and facilitate aid to the most vulnerable,” he stated.
As al-Burhan attempts to deflect responsibility by blaming external actors like the UAE for allegedly arming the RSF, Dagalo urged the international community to see through these distractions and recognize the SAF’s unwillingness to embrace peace.
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to worsen, with rising numbers of displaced individuals and increasing hunger. Yet, the RSF remains dedicated to advocating for peace, emphasizing its role as a protector of civilians and a facilitator of essential aid.
In a time of deepening conflict, Dagalo’s commitment to a peaceful resolution stands as a beacon of hope for the Sudanese people, who yearn for stability and security amid the chaos. The RSF’s ongoing efforts to engage in dialogue and provide humanitarian assistance illustrate its dedication to the future of Sudan and its citizens.
