Russia urges ceasefire in Sudan to prepare for political resolution

A Russian official has called for the cessation of hostilities in Sudan as a precursor to a political solution to the war crisis in the country.

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned in a statement that Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ali al-Sadiq spoke with the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy to the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov.

According to the statement on Wednesday, the Russian official called for “the necessity to seek a cessation of hostilities as a prelude to a political solution.” He also emphasized his country’s commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty and the integrity and safety of its territory.

The two officials exchanged views on the crisis in Sudan, in addition to discussing the development of relations between the two countries and mutual support in the United Nations and other international forums.

A fierce war erupted between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on April 15, causing 5.8 million people to flee their homes and the destruction of infrastructure, leading to the disruption of most economic activities.
