Russian, Congolese leaders hold talks in Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso to the Kremlin on Thursday. The visit, part of Russia’s intensified engagement with African nations since 2022, aims to strengthen bilateral ties.

Putin praised Sassou Nguesso for his efforts in fostering Russian-Congolese relations, noting his participation in two Russia-Africa summits and his work in enhancing political, trade, and economic cooperation.

“You personally have done a lot for the development of Russian-Congolese relations. We are grateful for your joint work on the international stage,” Putin said.

Sassou Nguesso, in Russia since Tuesday, is on his second visit to the country in less than a year, following his attendance at the Russia-Africa summit in Saint Petersburg last July. His current trip is expected to culminate in the signing of agreements on energy, trade, and security cooperation.

“We would like to discuss with you and other officials the best way to advance cooperation between our countries in all fields, including economy, finance, defense, and security. We need security nowadays,” said Sassou Nguesso.

During the visit, Putin awarded Sassou Nguesso an Order of Honor for his contributions to developing bilateral ties. Russia’s outreach to African countries is part of its strategy to counter western sanctions and isolation over the war in Ukraine. Most African nations have maintained a neutral stance on the conflict, advocating for a ceasefire and peace talks.
