Rwanda issues recall for Kenyan drug over safety concerns

Rwanda’s health authorities have taken action by recalling specific batches of antifungal tablets sourced from Kenya due to safety apprehensions.

The Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (RFDA) released a directive instructing importers to retrieve all supplies of Fluconazole 200mg tablets manufactured by a Kenyan company.

The RFDA further mandated all retailers and healthcare facilities to cease the distribution of these tablets and return them to the original suppliers.

This decision came subsequent to an earlier alert issued by the authority, notifying the Kenyan manufacturer of observed discoloration in the tablets.

Reports from the RFDA indicated that four large batches of pink Fluconazole 200mg tablets, imported into Rwanda, displayed white discoloration shortly after being placed on the shelves.

Confirming the entry of some affected tablet batches into the Rwandan market, the agency expressed concern.

Rwandan health officials intend to launch an investigation to determine any adverse effects experienced by individuals who have used the drug.

Meanwhile, Kenyan authorities have not yet addressed whether the same drug, commonly used to treat fungal or yeast infections, will undergo a recall from the local market.
