The husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, has died while receiving medical treatment in Zanzibar.
Tanzania’s vice president announced his death on Monday and offered condolences to the president and her family.
Hassan had been receiving treatment for a heart condition.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan dies in Zanzibar
Hassan became Tanzania’s first gentleman in 2021 when Samia Suluhu Hassan became the country’s first female president.
She took office following the death of President John Magufuli.
Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi said arrangements were being made for Hassan to be buried in his family’s native Zanzibar.
The couple had four children, including three sons and a daughter who serves as a lawmaker.
African leaders send condolences
Leaders across the region sent messages of sympathy following the announcement.
Kenyan President William Ruto expressed condolences on behalf of Kenya’s government and people.
He described Hassan as President Samia’s lifelong companion and a distinguished son of Tanzania.
Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye also offered condolences to President Hassan and the Tanzanian people.
Samia Suluhu Hassan serving second term
President Hassan is currently serving her second term.
She won Tanzania’s 2025 presidential election with more than 97% of the vote. The election was disputed, and candidates from the two main opposition parties were barred from running.
Hassan had served as Tanzania’s vice president before becoming president in 2021.
