Leading the Saudi Arabian delegation at the opening of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah emphasized his country’s call for the unification of efforts to respond to the humanitarian situation in Sudan.
In his speech, he stated that Saudi Arabia has invited all Sudanese parties to attend a meeting in Jeddah. He also highlighted the need to establish safe corridors to support the Sudanese people, calling on international contributors to support Sudan and alleviate its suffering.
The Saudi Foreign Minister’s remarks came after Martin Griffiths, the UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs, emphasized that the conflict in Sudan is worsening due to the flow of weapons from abroad.
It’s worth noting that the war erupted between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in mid-April, turning tensions related to an internationally-backed plan for political transition into direct confrontation.
The conflict has led to widespread clashes, looting, and a shortage of food and medicine in Khartoum and other cities, forcing over five million people to flee their homes.
Additionally, the conflict has resulted in over 3,000 deaths, according to the United Nations, although doctors and activists argue that the actual number is much higher.
