Senegal has confirmed a case of mpox in a foreign man who arrived in the country last week, the health ministry said late Saturday.
The patient is in stable condition, has been placed in isolation and is receiving care, the ministry said, without specifying the virus variant. A ministry spokesperson said on Monday that no additional cases have been detected and that 25 contacts are under monitoring.
It is the first mpox infection Senegal has reported this year. Mpox spreads through close contact and typically causes fever, fatigue and characteristic pus-filled skin lesions. Illness is usually mild but can be fatal in rare cases.
The World Health Organization re-declared mpox a global public health emergency in August 2024 amid an outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of Congo that spread to neighboring countries.
