Senegal’s prime minister heads to Morocco after fan detentions

Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko will begin an official visit to Morocco on Monday, following the detention of Senegalese fans after the Africa Cup final.

Eighteen Senegalese supporters remain in pre-trial detention in Morocco, accused of hooliganism during the tense championship match on January 18.

Senegal won the final 1–0 after extra time, a dramatic victory that spilled from the pitch into crowded streets.

Their trial opened on Thursday in a Rabat court, but proceedings were postponed until January 29, officials confirmed.

The two countries maintain cooperative relations across tourism, energy, infrastructure and transport, bound also by long-standing religious ties.

Sonko’s visit takes place within the framework of a joint bilateral commission meeting scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.

A Moroccan-Senegalese economic forum will accompany the talks, aiming to deepen commercial links and steady diplomatic waters.

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI expressed regret over the incidents, while Sonko called publicly for calm and restraint.

Yet rival fans continue trading sharp words online, where echoes of the final still ripple through digital stands.
