Sierra Leone: Sunday’s attack was coup attempt

Sierra Leone’s police chief announced on Tuesday that a failed coup attempt was behind the deadly clashes on Sunday in Freetown.

The attackers aimed to overthrow the government through force.

The unrest left at least 21 people dead, including soldiers and civilians.

ECOWAS, the West African regional bloc, expressed its readiness to support Sierra Leone in maintaining stability.

ECOWAS delegation leader Omar Touray pledged regional support but did not specify the form of assistance.

Nigeria’s defense chief affirmed ECOWAS’s commitment to Sierra Leone’s government and readiness to provide necessary support.

Police released photos of 32 men and two women wanted for their involvement in the unrest, offering a reward for information leading to their capture.

President Julius Maada Bio met with the ECOWAS delegation headed by Nigeria’s national security adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu.

Ribadu warned that any attempt to destabilize Sierra Leone would not be tolerated by ECOWAS or Nigeria.

The unrest has raised concerns about another coup in West Africa, which has witnessed several military takeovers since 2020.
