Social Democratic Party slams U.S. sanctions on RSF’s Dagalo

The Sudanese Social Democratic Party has sharply criticized the recent U.S. sanctions targeting the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), calling the move counterproductive to ongoing peace efforts in the conflict-stricken nation.

In a statement issued on Friday, the party condemned the sanctions, arguing that they undermine efforts to resolve Sudan’s war. The party contended that the RSF, under General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has shown a commitment to peace by supporting national, regional, and international initiatives aimed at ending the conflict.

“The RSF’s position in favor of peace deserves recognition and appreciation,” the statement read.

The party also took aim at the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, accusing them of rejecting all ceasefire proposals and continuing to perpetuate the war. The party argued that this stance is detrimental to the aspirations of the Sudanese people, who are desperately seeking peace and stability.

“If the U.S. is genuinely committed to aiding the Sudanese people, it should direct its pressure toward the SAF leadership, which remains the main barrier to peace,” the statement continued.

The Social Democratic Party described the U.S. sanctions as “unfair” and suggested they may inadvertently strengthen the SAF and extremist groups, further intensifying the ongoing crisis. The party urged the U.S. to reconsider its approach, advocating for balanced measures that would better support Sudan’s path to peace.

Since the outbreak of the war in April 2023, Sudan has been in the grip of a brutal conflict between the RSF and the SAF. The fighting has displaced millions and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis, with little prospect of resolution in sight.
