Somali army retakes captured area from al-Shabaab

On Monday evening, the Somali army announced the recapture of a new area from the grip of al-Shabaab militants, an affiliate of the Al-Qaeda organization, in the central region of the country.

The Somali army reported that it regained control of the area called “Biraq,” located 16 kilometers from the Debeglo area in the Mudug province. Additionally, the Somali army conducted sweep operations in the forested areas of the province.

They indicated that “the armed group fled the area, while joint forces are pursuing remnants of the militants to ensure security and stability,” with no immediate statement released by the militant group.

The Somali forces have been battling the terrorist group for over 10 years, which has carried out numerous attacks, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, security personnel, and military personnel. The group has targeted government facilities and hotels, particularly in the capital, Mogadishu.
