Somali forces kill 27 al-Shabaab fighters in major operation

Somalia’s military says it has killed 27 fighters from the Islamist group al-Shabaab during a large-scale operation in the country’s الجنوب, targeting key strongholds in the Juba regions.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Defence Ministry said the operation was carried out by the Somali National Armed Forces, backed by regional security units, in areas around Jilib, Hagar and Afmadow districts in Middle and Lower Juba.

Officials said the offensive included coordinated ground advances alongside airstrikes conducted with support from international partners, intensifying pressure on militants believed to be operating in the المنطقة.

The ministry added that several senior members of al-Shabaab were among those killed, though it did not disclose names. قوات الأمن also seized weapons, military المعدات and landmines allegedly prepared for attacks on civilians.

“The Somali National Armed Forces continues operations to pursue the remaining al-Shabaab elements to ensure security and stability,” the statement said.

The group has waged a long-running insurgency against the Somali government for more than 16 years, regularly targeting security forces, government officials and civilians.

Operations against al-Shabaab have intensified in recent months, with support from the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia and other international partners, as authorities seek to dismantle the group’s remaining strongholds.

The mission’s mandate was extended by the United Nations Security Council through the end of 2026 under a UK-backed resolution.
