Somalia’s Information Ministry announced a significant military operation against the terror group al-Shabaab on Thursday.
The ministry reported that at least 70 al-Shabaab terrorists were killed and 30 others wounded during the operation conducted in the Mudug region, north of the recently liberated town of Harardhere.
A statement by the ministry indicated the operation involved the Somali National Army alongside international security partners.
Somalia has long grappled with insecurity, primarily due to threats posed by al-Shabaab and the Daesh/ISIS terror groups.
Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate, has been actively fighting the Somali government and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) since 2007.
The group has intensified attacks recently, following a declaration of “all-out war” against them by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
