Somali leaders trade arrest warrants over election dispute

Somalia’s federal government and Jubbaland have issued arrest warrants for each other’s leaders following a contentious regional election. Jubbaland re-elected Ahmed Madobe as president, a move Mogadishu opposed, citing lack of federal oversight.

Jubbaland’s court accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of treason and inciting unrest, while Mogadishu’s court charged Madobe with treason and leaking secrets. Both leaders command troops, leaving warrant enforcement uncertain.

The dispute echoes past tensions, with Mogadishu deploying additional forces to Jubbaland after the election.
