Somali, Ugandan leaders discuss regional security in Kampala

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni convened in Kampala on Saturday to address pressing regional security matters.

The leaders emphasized the critical need for sustained peace and stability across the Horn of Africa and the wider African continent.

President Museveni welcomed his Somali counterpart, highlighting the importance of their discussions on regional issues.

A key focus of their meeting was the newly commenced African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

Both heads of state jointly appealed for consistent and sufficient financial support for this vital peacekeeping endeavor.

AUSSOM, succeeding ATMIS, is tasked by the UN Security Council with assisting the Somali government in its ongoing fight against al-Shabaab and other terrorist factions menacing the region.

Furthermore, President Mohamud and President Museveni stressed the urgency of bolstering the capabilities of Somalia’s own security forces.

They urged the international community to actively participate in this capacity-building effort.
