Somalia unleashes anti-terror operation, targeting militants

Somalia’s armed forces killed 29 al-Shabaab militants in Jabad Godane, southeastern Somalia, during coordinated operations with international partners, officials said.

The Defence Ministry said the overnight strikes targeted militant positions, striking a blow against a group entrenched by years of insurgency.

Officials said vehicles and weapons meant for attacks on civilians were destroyed during air operations in the Middle Shabelle region.

Al-Shabaab has fought Somalia’s government since 2007, seeking to impose its strict interpretation of sharia law nationwide.

The group’s campaign has fuelled decades of violence, testing a fragile state backed by international allies.

The ministry praised foreign partners for intelligence sharing and operational support, though it did not name the countries involved.

For residents, the strikes offered cautious hope, as Somalia’s long war against extremism grinds on.
