Somalia’s armed forces say they have killed 29 al Shabaab fighters during a coordinated security operation carried out with the support of international partners in southeastern Somalia.
In a statement released on Thursday, the defence ministry said the operation took place in the town of Jabad Godane and involved joint action aimed at disrupting militant activity. The ministry described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to weaken al Shabaab’s operational capabilities.
According to the statement, overnight air operations were also conducted in the Middle Shabelle region, where vehicles and weapons allegedly intended for use in attacks against civilians were destroyed. The ministry said the strikes were designed to prevent imminent threats and reduce the group’s ability to carry out further violence.
Al Shabaab has waged an insurgency in Somalia since 2007, seeking to overthrow the internationally backed government and impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law. Despite sustained military pressure, the group continues to carry out deadly attacks targeting security forces and civilians across the country.
The defence ministry praised the role of international partners in the operation, citing cooperation in intelligence sharing, security coordination, and operational support. However, it did not specify which countries or organisations were involved.
