South Africa halts border traffic amid Mozambique protests

South African authorities have temporarily closed the busy Lebombo border crossing with Mozambique due to escalating post-election violence in the neighboring country.

The decision to close the border was made late Tuesday after reports of vehicles being torched on the Mozambican side of the port of entry.

Michael Masiapato, Commissioner of the Border Management Authority, emphasized the need to prioritize public safety.

Mozambique has been experiencing widespread protests since the October 9th presidential election, where incumbent Daniel Chapo secured a decisive victory.

Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane has contested the results, alleging fraud and calling for further demonstrations.

The closure of the Lebombo border is expected to disrupt cross-border trade, travel, and seasonal worker movements between the two countries.

South African authorities are advising travelers to seek alternative routes or postpone their journeys until the situation stabilizes.

In a gesture of humanitarian assistance, South Africa has offered refuge to seven Mozambican officials who sought safety on the South African side of the border.

As the situation in Mozambique remains volatile, it is crucial for travelers to stay informed and monitor updates from official sources.
