South African Minister Kodwa Resigns Amid Corruption Allegations

It has been reported that Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa, who was arrested on corruption charges in the Republic of South Africa, has resigned.

According to national media reports, Kodwa was arrested on allegations of corruption totaling 1.6 million South African rand (approximately $85,000) in a public procurement tender.

A written statement from the South African government announced Kodwa’s resignation following his arrest.

The statement conveyed that Kodwa vehemently denies the allegations against him.

Kodwa, one of the closest figures to President Cyril Ramaphosa, served as the National Spokesperson of the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), from 2014 to 2017.

After serving as Deputy Minister of State Security from 2019 to 2023, Kodwa was appointed as Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture last year.

Kodwa, accused of involvement in a 1.6 million rand corruption scandal, has been under investigation since 2022.
