South Korea summons Russian ambassador amid diplomatic tensions

South Korea summoned Russia’s Ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the signing of a “comprehensive strategic partnership agreement” between Russia and North Korea.

According to Yonhap news agency, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the matter.

The statement noted that Russia’s Ambassador to Seoul, Georgy Zinoviev, was summoned to the Ministry, where Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun conveyed South Korea’s position on the “comprehensive strategic partnership agreement” signed between Moscow and Pyongyang.

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited North Korea yesterday and signed a “comprehensive strategic partnership agreement” between the two sides.

Putin mentioned that the agreement commits each party to provide military assistance in case of attack but avoided using the term “alliance.”

Following his meeting with his counterpart, Putin stated that within the framework of the strategic partnership agreement, Russia remains committed to enhancing military and technical cooperation with North Korea.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un referred to the agreement as a “pact,” emphasizing that the relationship has been elevated to a “high alliance” level.

The comprehensive strategic partnership agreement reportedly includes a commitment for each party to provide military assistance in case of attack.
