South Sudan approves bilateral agreement with Kuwait

The Transitional Legislative Council in South Sudan has approved the bilateral agreement to establish a joint committee for bilateral cooperation between the governments of South Sudan and Kuwait.

The agreement, signed last year, aims to enhance cooperation in science, information technology, education, finance, health, and investment.

During the presentation of the report in front of the parliament on Monday, Joseph Malwal Dong, the chairperson of the joint committees on Foreign Affairs, Finance and Economic Planning, and Legislation and Justice, said that during the audit process, there was a unanimous acknowledgement that the State of Kuwait had previously assisted the government of South Sudan at that time.

The agreement has a duration of five years and can be renewed unless either party notifies the other of its intention to terminate the agreement.

Peter Gatkuoth, a member of the armed opposition People’s Movement, said that having a bilateral agreement with Kuwait is crucial because Kuwait is one of the wealthy countries in the Gulf region.

He added, “As a young nation, it is essential to establish bilateral relations with Kuwait to foster growth because bilateral relations revolve around political, scientific, economic, and cultural issues.”

Joseph Marona, a member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), mentioned that the relations between South Sudan and Kuwait date back to the 1970s during the time of then Sudan when it assisted the government of South Sudan in various areas.
